Emergency water leak under the house. on a Saturday eve and I called and Michael was on call and came. Right out . Gave an estimate and fixed the issue plus letting me know what else needs done . Appreciate him taking time away from family to come straight out an hour or so away. Thanks Michael Cantrell. Plus Ethan N. Also had to come out the same evening to check why the power went out in one room and half of another. He found the issues and replaced the problem and also let us know what else was wrong that we put on our 2026 to do list in January. Thanks so much. The electric was a hard one we were stumped 🤔 but he figured it out and fixed it. Thank you both for coming and staying late into the evening to ensure we now fixed both plumbing and electric issues until next time we will see you soon to upgrade our pipes and electrical work. When you have a home . It's best to up keep it that's what I told my husband. Thank u guy's you are appreciated. And once again same issue with the electric and Davis to the rescue. Thanks Ethan for coming back out and finding the issue and fixing it once again.
Michael from Davis is awesome! He's the real deal. Punctual, super friendly, very skilled, and really cares about doing the job right. He went above and beyond and made the whole process stress-free. I'll definitely ask for him for future plumbing jobs. Thanks Michael! Great job!
Travis just left our home after working on our HVAC system. I've never had a technician be so thorough or thoughtful in explaining the process with updates or progress and outlining all options for dealing with our issue. We were experiencing overwhelming musty and moldy smells coming from our HVAC in our new house. I had another company come clean the system and they were done in 30 minutes and the smell didn't change. Travis listened to and understood my concerns about the smell and took them seriously. He disassembled our unit and THOROUGHLY cleaned the coils and the inside of our HVAC system and resolved issues that we didn't even know we had. Very appreciate of the attention to detail and the understanding. Appreciate you, Travis!
The water heater was off on a Saturday and after trying some things, it still wasn't working. I called Davis and was informed they consider a water heater issue as an emergency and would send over a technician (after hours fee applies). Ryder called when he was about 35 minutes away to notify me he was on the way. He arrived on time, covered his shoes and we talked about the issue and the Davis customer satisfaction process to keep me informed from the beginning. Ryder resolved the issue and got the water heater up and working due to his knowledge and expertise! Later in the afternoon the temperature / pressure valve failed unexpectedly and Ryder returned to investigate further and also determined the expansion tank was waterlogged. So, rather patching an old water heater, a new one would be the best route. Ryder stepped up and obtained the new one and installed it, which meant working late into the night. Ryder knew we needed the hot water so the family could get ready for a funeral visitation service on Sunday and he went above and beyond to ensure that the water heater would be ready. I would call Davis again if I had a need. Thanks to everyone at Davis!
SERVICE DATE NOVEMBER 13, 2025

On November 10, 2025 we requested a cost estimate from Davis Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electric to have an expansion tank installed on our hot water heater. On the 13th, Ryder W. from the Plumbing Department arrived early, fully prepared to provide a written estimate after consulting with us and looking at the hot water heater and its location.

During our discussions we learned Davis would also wall mount an expansion tank we provided (we preferred a brand not stocked by Davis). In addition to the expansion tank, we also requested an estimate to replace both outside spigots that were leaking. After examining both spigots, Ryder explained our replacement options, the installation methods used (PEX crimping verses soldering), time to complete the work, and loss of water service while the tank installation and spigot repairs were being done. He also suggested installing a gauged pressure-reducing valve (PRV) where the main water supply line enters the house. The gaged PRV provides a positive method to monitor and prevent high pressure from entering the house plumbing which can damage pipes, valves, and equipment. Ryder then prepared a written detailed cost estimate for each requested task and financing options for our review and discussion. We decided to be preventative instead of reactive, and have scheduled to have everything done in the coming weeks.

Ryder is a pleasant and polite young man who is punctual, competent, and customer oriented. He provided a detailed cost estimate for the tank installation that we had initially requested and effortlessly modified it to include the additional tasks we discussed after his arrival. All our questions were addressed and he did a thorough job explaining our options and the installation process. Ryder will be installing all the plumbing equipment himself. We look forward to his next visit.

We highly recommend Davis Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical. Customer satisfaction is their mantra!

My experience with Davis Heating,Cooling, Plumbing and Electric was as good as it gets. We had no water, major leak in our yard so we just googled Davis mainly because they advertised 24 hour service. Great decision that was. James was awesome, really knew exactly what to do and really polite. Really good operator as well. Will definitely use Davis in the future.
Joshua was an incredible technician. Timely and incredibly knowledgeable. He was thorough, patient and answered all our questions regarding how our new thermostat works, the overall heating system and even checked an additional item associated with the unit under our house. He gave us a mini heat/cooling lesson that really helped us to understand how the system works, what had happened in our case and how to prepare for the coming cold months when we are here and traveling. Highly recommend Davis Heating/Cooling. And ask for Joshua if you can request a technician!!

Common Causes of Drain Clogs

Keeping your plumbing system functioning smoothly means understanding what causes clogs in the first place. Here are some of the most common culprits:

  • Grease and food particles: When cooking oils and food scraps are rinsed down the sink, they may harden and stick to the sides of your pipes, creating stubborn clogs. Over time, these blockages can grow, leading to slow-draining or completely blocked sinks.
  • Hair and soap scum: Shower and bathroom sink drains often suffer from buildup caused by loose hair and soap residue. The combination can create a sticky blockage that’s tough to remove without professional intervention.
  • Tree roots: Roots from nearby trees can infiltrate your sewer line in search of moisture. These invasions not only block the pipes but can cause extensive damage requiring immediate attention.
  • Flushing inappropriate items: Toilets are built to handle waste and toilet paper only. Flushing wipes, feminine hygiene products, or other non-biodegradable materials can easily lead to a clogged drain.
  • Buildup from hard water: Mineral deposits from hard water can accumulate in your plumbing, narrowing the passage for water and causing recurring clogs over time.
  • Aging plumbing systems: Older homes may have pipes prone to corrosion or collapse, making blockages a frequent issue.

The Dangers of Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners might seem like a quick fix for a clogged drain, but they come with significant risks. The harsh chemicals can corrode your pipes, especially in older homes, leading to expensive replacements. Over time, the frequent use of these products may weaken your plumbing system, causing leaks or structural failures.

Additionally, chemical drain cleaners pose a health hazard. Fumes from these products can irritate your lungs and skin, while improper handling risks chemical burns. They can also harm the environment, contaminating water sources when improperly disposed of. For truly safe and effective solutions, it’s best to rely on drain cleaning services provided by professional plumbers.

Preventative Measures to Keep Drains Clear

Maintaining clean drains is easier than dealing with clogged sewer lines or costly repairs. Here are some effective measures to keep your plumbing system running smoothly:

  • Mind what you flush: Avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper. Keep a small trash can in the bathroom to discourage improper disposal.
  • Use a drain cover: A simple, affordable drain cover can catch hair, soap, and other debris, especially in the shower.
  • Regularly flush with hot water: Pouring hot water down your drains weekly helps dissolve grease and buildup. For extra cleaning power, use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar before flushing with hot water.
  • Dispose of grease properly: Collect cooking oils and fats in a container instead of rinsing them down the sink.
  • Schedule professional maintenance: Hiring experienced plumbers for routine checks helps prevent drainage problems.
  • Trim nearby trees: Prevent tree roots from wreaking havoc by keeping trees near your property well-trimmed.

How to Choose a Reliable Drain Cleaning Service

Selecting a dependable drain cleaning service is key to resolving issues without unnecessary stress. Look for a company with a proven track record, like Davis. We employ experienced plumbers who understand how to handle everything from tree roots in sewer lines to stubborn clogs caused by grease and debris.

We also prioritize transparent communication. We provide upfront pricing and detailed explanations of how the work begins. And check our customer reviews so you know for sure you’re hiring a team known for solving plumbing problems effectively and with care!

Reasons to Hire a Drain Cleaner

Many homeowners might be tempted to tackle a clogged drain themselves. After all, how hard can it be? However, DIY drain cleaning often leads to more significant problems down the line.

Professional drain services offer several advantages over DIY methods. Firstly, professionals have the right tools and expertise to handle stubborn clogs that household plungers and chemicals can’t resolve. They can pinpoint the underlying reason for the problem and provide a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix.

Another reason to hire professionals is safety. Drain cleaning chemicals can be extremely hazardous if not handled correctly, posing risks to both your health and your plumbing system. Professional drain cleaners use safe, effective methods that protect your pipes and ensure the blockage is completely removed. So, before you reach for that bottle of drain cleaner, consider calling our experts for emergency drain cleaning in Roanoke and Southside VA!

Signs of Serious Drain Issues

Understanding the common signs of serious drainage problems can help you address issues before they escalate. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Slow draining water: If water takes longer than usual to leave the sink, tub, or shower, it could signal a buildup in your pipes or a deeper issue in the plumbing system.
  • Multiple drains backing up: When multiple drains in your home are clogged simultaneously, it often indicates a clogged sewer line, which may require immediate professional attention.
  • Foul odors: Persistent bad smells coming from your drains could mean organic material like grease or food is decomposing inside the pipes. In some cases, it could even hint at a septic tank issue.
  • Gurgling sounds: Unusual noises coming from your drains when water is running might point to trapped air caused by blockages.
  • Standing water: Puddles forming around your sinks or fixtures signal drainage problems that need immediate resolution.

Recognizing these common signs early can prevent more severe plumbing problems and costly repairs down the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if you don’t fix a clogged drain?

If you wait too long to clean drains that are clogged, it can cause several problems. Over time, the blockage can cause water to back up, resulting in costly water damage. Additionally, stagnant water can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, posing health risks to your family. Unresolved clogs can also put extra pressure on your plumbing system, increasing the risk of a leak, crack, or burst pipe.

How long does it take a plumber to clear a drain?

The time it takes to clean drains can vary depending on the severity of the clog. We can often unclog a minor sink or toilet blockage in less than an hour, while more complex issues involving multiple drains may take several hours to fix. Our professional plumbers use specialized tools to quickly and efficiently clear blockages, minimizing disruption to your home.

How can I prevent clogs in my drains?

Preventing clogs starts with being cautious about what you put down your drains. Steer clear of pouring grease or oil down the sink, as they can solidify and cause blockages. Use strainers to catch hair and food particles, and run hot water through your sink regularly to help clear any buildup. Scheduling regular professional drain cleaning services can also help keep your plumbing system in good condition.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?

While chemical drain cleaners can be effective for minor clogs, they can also damage your plumbing if used frequently or incorrectly. The corrosive ingredients present in these concoctions can weaken your plumbing system. Instead, we recommend using natural methods to clean drains, such as baking soda and vinegar.
